CREATIVE GIRLS

While in Cádiz during my early morning walks I discovered a craft shop along the way. I peeked through the window to see the prettiest creations, shoes, photo albums, jewelry, colorful Sevillian dresses, paper flowers and more. I want to meet the makers of these beautiful crafts, I thought. The next day I entered the shop and to my surprise I was told that the crafts were not done by one person but by 7 creative local girls. What inspires them? Read their stories below and see some of their beautiful work.

I hope you enjoy our conversations and get inspired by these creative ladies <3

CHICAS CREATIVAS

MARI CARMEN RODRIGUEZ – Con Papel y Punto

I have always been fascinated by books made by hand. This is an art that my great uncle Jose was extraordinary at. I remember going inside his workshop and looking through his creations, touching all of his supplies and learning on my own how to put a book together. Mari Carmen is an expert, her work is very delicate and you will never think her books and boxes were done by hand as every single detail is done to perfection. I was very fortunate to be able to take a class with her 😉

Suz: Why did you choose to work with paper and card board?
MC: I have always worked with paper, I am intrigued by international paper brands such as the Japanese, Italian, English and natural paper. They all bring a different touch to my work.

Suz: You have a wide variety of projects, which one is your favorite?
MC: I don’t have a favorite one, each job is unique and each job has its own challenges. You will never find two that look the same.

Suz: Where do you find inspiration?
MC: In everyday life. When I go paper shopping, seeing the colors, feeling the texture, that moment alone with paper can be very inspiring.

MAITE BENITEZ – Shoe Designer at Terry Bembar

Remember “Sex and the City” Carrie Bradshaw’s first love? For sure it was not Mr. Big, it was shoes <3. I truly think if she had met Maite they would have been best friends. Maite’s shoes are very unique, watching her working is quite an experience, so much love, creativity and passion are for sure poured in every single shoe.

Suz: Shoes, shoes and more shoes… what made you get into designing shoes?
MB: When I started to sew I made many fashion designs and thought I could complement them with shoes. I started to investigate shoe design schools and found Christian Romero’s design school in Barcelona. It was there I learned how to design and to make Oxford style shoes. Next thing I know I was already shopping for shoe materials for my first collection in Elda, Alicante where most of Spain’s shoe-makers are based.

Suz: Which one is your favorite color combination?
MB: I actually don’t have a favorite color combination. I go with the flow and let my inspiration decide. But I do have a favorite material. I like to use stamped cork as it is very flexible and I can be more creative with my designs.

Suz: What inspires you?
MB: Nature inspires me. When I take walks through gardens I take notes of the perfect color combinations that Mother Earth puts together. That unique mix of hues is what I try to convey in my shoes.

JULIA BORRERO CONTRERAS – Illustrator and personality creator at Milvilla

When you meet Julia and her characters you would like to sit down with a cup of coffee and hear the stories of each one. I would dare to say that they all have a little bit of her in them but on the other hand I can’t be really sure. I have no confirmation. Her day begins with the drawing tablet in her hands and it is fascinating to see her at work. If you look at her characters carefully you will see how they come to life, the expressions, the sadness, the silly faces, the defiance, all of these feelings are very well defined in each one of them.

Suz: When did you started to create characters?
JB: Since I was a little girl. I remember myself always drawing animals (never humans) and fantasy characters. People would ask me why I drew them, I always replied “Because I love to draw what I imagine in my head”.

Suz: Which one is your favorite character and why?
JB: Definitely the “Lion-Girl”. I created her as an avatar at the association of illustrators I am part of. Later I started a series, which I have not completed yet, to create awareness about animal abuse, to show that we are not that different from the rest of the species. I truly believe that illustration has become a favorite of the people.

Suz: What is your favorite time of day to create?
JB: During the morning, the earlier the better. Before I used to do it in the afternoon and it was hard to get in the groove but I have forced myself to do it because of the amount of work I have to complete, and each day I love it more.

Suzanne Crossland Creativas Cadiz Milvilla Illustracion

INMACULADA GÓMEZ-PLANA – Handmade Crafts at Cicerones Gaditanos

For Inmaculada to make any type of crafts comes naturally. Since she was a little girl she enjoyed creating handmade products studying porcelain, acrylic, oil painting and other mediums. The colors, sounds and vibrancy of the Cadiz Carnival have been key for her artistic inspiration.

Suz: What are your favorite art mediums?
IG: Porcelain, acrylic, oil painting on canvas.

Suz: What inspires you?
IG: Observing nature and daily life.

Suz: Do you have a favorite project? Why?
IG: I have many favorite art projects but the one I am very proud of having created guided tours of Cadiz for people with disabilities and that use sign language.

Suzanne Crossland Creativas Cadiz Cicerones Gaditanos

MARISOL TORRES – Paper flower designer at Mariblú

Marisol is a fine art restorer by profession but her love for paper, fabric, cardboard and the need to create original art made her open “Mariblú”. From here she produces beautiful customized bridal bouquets in paper. She also had the brilliant idea to open a co-working space called “Piedra, papel, tijera” (Stone, paper, scissors) where other creative people could share a working place to create and collaborate. Here is where I met this lovely group of creative girls <3

Suz: Why are you so passionate about paper?
MT: Since I was a little girl during the month of April I would help my mother and neighbors make paper flowers for the pilgrimage floats. We used colorful recycled paper and we had to work fast. Since then I learned to love and respect paper and to enjoy the community gatherings.

Suz: What happens after a bride orders a bouquet from you?
MT: We meet to choose the flower styles, the colors and the paper then I make a dummy bouquet so she can have a better idea how the end product will look.

Suz: Tell me about your biggest satisfaction?
MT: When I see a happy bride. When her mother and mother-in-law are happy and appreciative of my work. Almost always I have to create replicas of the bouquet for them as well.

Suzanne_Crossland_CreativasCadiz_Mariblu

CAROLINA BABLé – Fashion designer at Carolina Bablé

Can you imagine if every time you go to an event you could wear a espectacular dress made to fit? Carolina Bablé can do that for you. The first time I saw her designs I was at awe. The color combinations, the fabrics, her taste and attention to detail makes her designs very unique and exquisite. Here she tells us a little bit about her work and motivation.

Suz: Why fabric, thread and scissors? What made you fall in love with what you do?
CB: I moved to Madrid to study Theatrical Interpreting, after many years of hard work and little possibilities I decided to switch to the technical side to be able to survive in this artistic world. My mother and grandmother were always sewing at home and I had learned the basics from them when I started fashion school I knew I had a gift and my life changed.

Suz: Have you ever had a project that become a challenge?
CB: When I moved to Cadiz I had to demonstrate quickly what I had learned. I received requests to design costumes for the Cadiz Carnival, famous for its amusing and creative characters. With very specific guidelines I had to execute them as perfect as possible and I did it!

Suz: Tell me how your day begins.
CB: Being a mompreneur, my day begins dedicating all morning to my baby then going to the studio to take care of requests and designs. It can be hard at times because I try to give my 100% being a Mom and a designer but thanks to the support of my husband and family I can move forward because this is what I love doing, it is part of my DNA.

Suzanne Crossland Creativas Cadiz Mari Carolina Bablé Fashion Design

Suz: Por qué tela, hilo y tijeras?

ROCIO DANERI – Jewelry designer at Artesanía Daneri

If I have to list all the crafts Rocio can make with her talented hands I will need another page. Her list goes on and on, from custom jewelry to bride and groom cake toppers and hair pieces, this is just naming a few.

Suz: What inspired you to become a jewelry designer?
RD: I have always had a special interest in design and passion for crafts. Flamenco fashion was what inspired me to start designing my soutache earrings line.

Suz: Why do you think women feel more attractive when wearing accessories?
RD: I believe accessories can make a dress, a look be more fun, versatile and attractive. My designs are personalized that way women can feel comfortable wearing them.

Suz: Which jewelry piece is your favorite from your designs?
RD: It is difficult to point at one piece since each of them has a little piece of my heart, it is like a baby but I live my soutache earrings are the ones I feel sad to sell, they are all so pretty I want to keep them all.

Suzanne Crossland Creativas Cadiz Artesania Daneri
